The E8 was a European route running from London to Harwich and onto Moscow. It existed from 1950 to 1983.
Route
The route remained the same for 33 years: London - Utrecht - Berlin - Moscow.
UK Route
Beginning in Central London, the E8 headed northeast on the A11 to the Green Man, before taking the A12 to Colchester then the A604 to Harwich.
Belgian Route
Apparently there was a Belgian route, providing an alternate routing via Antwerp between Harwich and Hoek van Holland.
Dutch Route
Hoek van Holland - The Hague - Utrecht - Appeldorn - Oldenzaal - Germany
German Route
The Netherlands - Schuttorf - Osnabruck - Hannover - Magdeburg - Berlin - Frankfurt an der Oder - Poland

When the new system was implemented, the E5 was renumbered as follows:
- London - Colchester: E30
- Colchester - Harwich: E32
- Hoek van Holland - Moscow: E30
