The original route given the number B1006 was a short link to the west of Chelmsford.
It started on the A122 in the centre of Writtle and headed north to end under a mile later on the A414.
It was upgraded to become the A1091 in the mid-1920s but it is now unclassified, as is the road it met at the southern end.
