M63 was allocated to the section of then M62 Stretford-Eccles Bypass south of the Eccles Interchange in 1970 in advance of the opening of the first phase of the M602 and later westward re-routing of the M62 to Liverpool in 1974. It was later extended eastwards to pass Sale and Stockport before meeting the M66 at Bredbury.

These sections were renumbered as part of the M60 in 1998.

The original 1960 section from J1 to J7 was widened to dual three lanes in phases between 1983 and 1987, at considerable expense and disruption.
