The B1278 is a rural Class II road in County Durham.
It starts on the A177 Sedgefield bypass, on the northern edge of town. Originally, it began a little further south, meeting the pre-bypass A177 at the point where that road entered the built-up area.
Heading roughly northwards, the B1278 goes through Fishburn and Trimdon before reaching a couple of T-junctions (the first by Wingate Lodge, the former Wingate Arms PH) where we must turn first right and then, a few hundred yards further on, left: both of the other roads here are unclassified.
A short distance later we come to a roundabout junction with the A181 Wheatley Hill bypass and the route ends. This is another case where the B1278 used to continue a short distance further, to meet the pre-bypass main road.
