The B1298 is a largely urban B-road in northeast County Durham.
Originally, it started on the A184 in East Boldon and headed due north. This road, however, has now been reduced to the status of public footpath so it now starts a couple of miles west in the Mount Pleasant area of West Boldon, still on the A184. It heads north into Boldon Colliery before going east along New Road before reaching a roundabout and its original route.
The B1298 continues north along Boldon Lane, crossing the Newcastle to Sunderland railway line at a level crossing immediately afterwards. It zigzags through Whiteleas (the original route was straighter but is again closed to through traffic) before crossing the A1300 at a roundabout. At the next roundabout it meets the B1302 and turns right.
The B1298 enters the suburbs of South Shields along Stanhope Road, passing West Park. It reaches a roundabout on the B1301 by Chichester (the first syllable rhymes with "eye") metro station, which marks the original northern end of the B1298. The final section of B1298, along Chichester Road as far as the A1018, was originally the eastern end of the A185.
