The road starts at traffic lights on the A671 to the east of Whalley and heads west into the village along Accrington Road, the original route of the A-road before the present bypass was built. In the centre of the village the road reaches a mini-roundabout and turns right, onto the pre-bypass A59, heading north along King Street to the next mini-roundabout where the B6246 turns left, at its original eastern end.
We leave Whalley along Station Road. After going under the Blackburn to Clitheroe railway line the road goes under the current A59 bypass before continuing north past the Calderstones Hospital. It then crosses fields before going over the River Ribble and into Great Mitton. The road ends on the far side of the village at a T-junction on the B6243.
