The B6293 was originally allocated to the road between Alston and the A68 to the west of Crook. It ran over the Pennines, including the Killhope Cross summit of over 2000 feet, before following Weardale for virtually all the rest of the route.
In 1971, it was upgraded along with the then-B6292 as an extension of the A689.
