The A6038 skirts the edge of Ilkley Moor connecting Airedale and Wharfdale in Yorkshire.
The road starts on the A650 on the southern edge of Shipley before heading north through town. It crosses the railway line, the A657, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and the River Aire in quick succession (this section is largely D2) before turning northeast and eventually entering open country. The border between Bradford and Leeds is crossed before the A6038 skirts the edge of Guiseley to reach the A65 at a roundabout.
The A6038 multiplexes north along the A65 for over a mile, before leaving to the east at another roundabout in Menston. It then heads roughly east to meet the A660 Otley bypass, where it ends. The Menston to Otley section of road was originally the A6039 (with the A6038 ending at Guiseley) but was renumbered when the building of the Otley bypass altered the roads around the town.
