This article is about the original A4072 created in 1922.
For the later A4072 in Newport, see A4072 (Newport).

The original A4072 was a short link road to the south of Narberth, Pembrokeshire, between the A40 and A478.
Starting at a crossroads at Princes Gate where the A40 presumably used to TOTSO, the former A4072 headed west to cross the railway line to Pembroke Dock. In the next settlement, Cold Blow, the road bore left and soon reached Templeton, where it ended at a T-junction on the A478.
The A40 was rerouted through Whitland in the late 1920s and its original route through Princes Gate downgraded. The A4072 was downgraded at the same time as it no longer met a Class I road at its eastern end. It became an extension of the B4315 and is now the whole of that road's route.
