The A4017 is an urban A-road to the east of Bristol. The road's northern section used to be a spur of the A4174, but with that road's increased importance, the section was renumbered to reduce confusion!
We now start at the Bromley Heath Roundabout on the Avon Ring Road, and head south through Downend to the A432 at Mangotsfield. The road actually splits, with Overndale Road providing a spur for Bristol-bound traffic (in A4174 days this was a spur of a spur).
There is a very short multiplex with the A432 from Cleeve Hill to the roundabout, marking the original northern end of the A4017, and then the road is southbound once more, passing the A4175 and B4465 at Staple Hill, before splitting again at Two Mile Hill (the western fork is the original route). Both parts join the A420 in Kingswood. The western branch has a TOTSO and traffic-calmed section en route; the eastern branch is now the main route although at its end you can only turn left as the A420 is (except for buses) one-way eastbound at this point.
