Route outline (key)
A4161 Llanedeyrn – Waungron Park

The A4161 runs through Cardiff city centre mostly on the original line of the A48.

The road starts in the eastern suburb of Llanedeyrn on the new line of the A48. It heads south along the dual-carriageway Southern Way before turning off at the first GSJ; in reality the left-hand lane remains as the A4161 as the road becomes S2 as it continues as the A4232 for not much further.

At the roundabout the old A48 is met and the road turns right. Still dual, it heads south through a retail park along Newport Road, before the central reservation disappears as the road bears right; it's still pretty wide, however, with three lanes in each direction if you include the westbound bus lane.

Traffic lights are soon reached, where the A469 turns off to the right. For some reason this requires the A4161's carriageways to be separated. The road continues along Newport Road, now only S2 plus bus lane, before becoming dual once more near Roath Library. The road remains dual into the city centre. The A4160 is met at traffic lights just before the road goes under a railway bridge just north of Queen Street station.

The road leaves the old A48 here, which continues ahead along the now-pedestrianised Queen Street. The A4161, meanwhile, bears right onto Dumfries Place, then left onto Stuttgarter Strasse and Boulevard de Nantes (named after two of Cardiff's twin towns). The latter crosses a green space in front of the civic centre before reaching traffic lights on the A470 in front of the castle. The road TOTSOs left and loses its central reservation before bearing right on meeting Queen Street again, thus rejoining the old A48.

Crossing the River Taff

The road now heads west along Castle Street, still flanking the castle. It becomes dual for a short period either side of the bridge over the River Taff. The A4119 is crossed at traffic lights on the far side of the river and the road continues west. It deviates to the south slightly to avoid the centre of Canton, then runs parallel to the main railway line for about a mile. Presently the road goes under the Cardiff City Line before ending back on the A48 at a roundabout.
