|Route outline (key)|
The A4167 is a short A-road to the south of Birmingham city centre whose current existence is debated.
The road starts at the southeastern corner of the A4540 Middleway and heads east. Initially the road is Belgrave Road but it becomes Highgate Road on crossing the next set of traffic lights, on what is the original route of the A435. The road then immediately goes under the Camp Hill Line and continues along a road which appears to have been lined with terraced housing at one point but this has been demolished, making the surroundings surprisingly green. Another set of traffic lights leads the road into an area of light industry before the road reaches a final set of lights on the A34 Stratford Road in Sparkbrook. Ahead is the B4126.
Whether this road really is the A4167 is not entirely certain. Whereas Birmingham City Council have given this road the A4167 number in official documents they have also claimed it to be a spur of the A4540. Maps are just as vague (it has been claimed as part of the A34 or A41) and road signs do not give the road any number.
The road came into existence some time before 1950. Starting on the A456 at Five Ways the road headed east along Islington Row, which was originally part of the B4126, then along the previously unclassified Great Colmore Street and Bromsgrove Street to end on the A41 (now B4100) Digbeth, making the road just under a mile and a half long.
Some time between 1961 and 1973 the majority of the road was rerouted. After running along Islington Row as before the road then continued east along more of the B4126, along Lee Bank Road, Sun Street, Belgrave Road and Highgate Road to terminate on the A41 (now A34) Stratford Road after well over 2 miles. It is assumed that the old route of the A4167 was declassified at this time. Certainly, Great Colmore Street has been truncated at its western end and the eastern end of Bromsgrove Street now has the markets built on top.
In more recent years the majority of the later route of the A4167 has been heavily upgraded to become the southern section of the A4540 Middleway, between Five Ways and Haden Circus (its J5 and J1). The section east of here seems to have remained the A4167 although no-one really seems to be sure.
