The A4173 follows the most direct route between Gloucester and Stroud. The road was originally numbered B4072, which number still remains within the Gloucester eastern bypass.
The road starts at the St Barnabas roundabout on the A38 to the south of Gloucester city centre. It heads south along Stroud Road through the suburb of Tuffley and passing to the west of Robinswood Hill Country Park. There is a brief dual section as the road enters open country, after which it passes through the tiny village of Whaddon before going over the M5 without a junction.
On the far side of the motorway we go through Brookthorpe and then start climbing up into the Cotswolds. Presently the road reaches the village of Edge, which presumably got its name owing to being on the top of an escarpment. We descend southwards to Pitchcombe and end at the far side of the village at a sharply angled junction on the A46. Turn right along that road for Stroud.
