B6258 (Sedbergh - Kirkby Stephen)

The northern end of the former B6258 (now A683)

The B6258 was the road connecting the A684 in Sedbergh with the A685 near Kirkby Stephen. In the late 1950s it was renumbered as a northern extension of the A683.

Starting on the A684 on the eastern side of Sedbergh the road headed east along the valley of the River Rawthey before crossing the river and continuing upstream alongside the river for a few miles. It went through the scattered settlement of Cautley before crossing the river again. A tributary valley was then followed as the road continued in the same direction.

The B6258 continued to climb onto the moors. After passing a turn for Ravenstonedale the road bore right to go round the side of Ash Fell. After reaching a summit here the road started to descend and headed due north to end on the A685 to the south of Kirkby Stephen.
