The C1044 is Culduthel Avenue in Inverness, connecting the B861 and A8082 in the south of city. The main route of Culduthel Avenue is a historic road which dates from long before any modern development reached this far out from the city, which explains which this is a class III road, when many newer, and locally more significant, roads nearby are unclassified.
The construction of the A8082 Southern Distributor Road which, runs roughly parallel, has diminished the significance of this road and is now closed as a through route to motor vehicles, with a section past Inverness Royal Academy and the western end open to pedestrians and cycles only. The road originally met the A8082 (then B8082) at a T-junction on Culduthel Avenue's original alignment, but after this was superseded by Culduthel Mains Road Roundabout, the main line was realigned onto this roundabout.
The classification also includes several spurs into new housing on the south side of the route, which are named as part of Culduthel Avenue, as well as the cycle track spur on the original alignment leading to the A8082.
