The C1039 primarily runs along the north shore of the Beauly Firth from North Kessock east towards Muir of Ord. It is a very scenic route, with a few car parking areas and picnic sites along the coast. It starts at the North Kessock Junction on the A9, and heads down into the village. It is not entirely clear if the new road built to make this junction grade separated is included in the C1039 or not. Nor is it clear if the road down to the old ferry pier in North Kessock is included. However, the bulk of the route turns off Oakleigh Road near the village hall and runs east along the shore, climbing a little from Redcastle through Milton to meet the A832 at Garguston.
