The Shifnal Bypass was a planned bypass on the A464 in eastern Shropshire between Telford and Wolverhampton, first entering the Trunk Road Programme in 1965-66[1].
In 1974-75, it still was listed in the Forward Programme, and had the proposed cost of £0.4 million[2]; however, it was withdrawn from the Trunk Road Programme in 1976 due to Government spending cuts.[3]
The A464 was detrunked in 1984 following the opening of the M54[4], and so responsibility for any future bypass proposals moved to the then-Shropshire County Council; and now lie with Shropshire Council.
Similar proposals for a western bypass of the town have been regularly mentioned in the years since, although 21st century housebuilding means that the original route is no longer available at the southern end of the route; and so any resurrection of the proposal will need to avoid this area.
