The A3092 was upgraded from the B3044 in the 1935 Road numbering revision. It allowed traffic to go from the then-A31 by King Alfred's Statue to the A33 / A34 junction at the northern end of Jewry Street. However, since this was the starting point of the A34, the original proposition from the MoT was for the road to become an extension of the A34 itself. This appears not to have happened due to most traffic following the A33 to Southampton instead. Indeed, when the Winchester Bypass was opened in 1940, the A34 was extended south along the former A33 instead.
In any case, the road survived with Class I status until 1995, when all remaining A roads in Winchester were downgraded following the completion of the M3 over Twyford Down. Today, the road is part of the B3330.
