The A3084 was a temporary number allocated to northern section of the newly-constructed Exeter Bypass in 1937, having been renumbered from A378. It retained this number until the bypass was completed the following year, becoming the A38 (whose old route became the A3085). Since the opening of the M5, the road has been downgraded again.
