For the current route from Blackwater to Sandown, see A3056.
Created in 1924 by upgrading the B3326 to Class I, this, the original version of the A3056, ran from Blackwater Junction to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. In 1935 the A3020 and A3056 numbers swapped routes south of Blackwater, removing this version and creating the current version of the A3056.
Starting on the A3020 at Blackwater the road headed south through the village and followed the River Medina to Rookley. The road then headed in a more easterly direction (although the general route was still south) to Godshill, where a series of sharp bends pointed the road in an eastward direction. The road crossed the hills to cross the Shanklin to Ventnor railway line in Upper Hyde. Now essentially on the edge of Shanklin the road descended into town to end on the A3055 High Street.
