Cornwall is a traditional county in the South West of England, forming the most southwesterly part of the UK. The county town - and only city - is Truro, although Launceston and Bodmin were earlier considered to be the county town. The county officially includes the Scilly Isles to the southwest, although these have had a sui generis separate local authority for many years.

Geography & Economy

Cornwall is surrounded by the sea on three sides and only borders Devon on the fourth; the border follows the River Tamar with only the occasional detour. Inland parts of the county vary from fertile fields to exposed upland, with Bodmin Moor in the northeast the most inhospitable area of the county. Cornwall is traditionally well-known for mining, particularly tin and china clay (although the former is no longer mined), and fishing. However, the economy is now heavily based on tourism. St Ives is known for its art and Newquay for surfing.

Roads

Long-distance roads in Cornwall head east-west, connecting the county to Devon, although there is also a good network of local roads, with only Bodmin Moor and north Penwith being less well served. Most roads within the county are maintained by Cornwall Council, with the roads on the Scilly Isles maintained by the Isles of Scilly Council; these are all on the island of St Mary's. The primary sections of A30 and A38 are maintained by National Highways. In the southeast the road is linked to Plymouth by the toll Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry.
