In December 2017, it was proposed that the A14 could be upgraded to an expressway as part of the proposals to introduce a new type of road network. The proposal includes different expressway types with an aspiration that the highest quality expressways will be given motorway designation and an Ax(M) number. It has been speculated that the Huntingdon to Cambridge improvements could be the first section of A14(M) expressway to open.
By October 2019, Highways England had withdrawn the proposal: "To enable us to open the Huntingdon southern bypass section of our scheme earlier than originally planned, and ensure people can benefit from the scheme as soon as possible, we have now withdrawn our application. This means that the new road will open as an A-road. ... we are also applying for permanent measures to prohibit slow moving vehicles and use variable mandatory speed limits, which will help make journeys safer and smoother."
