The Strensham-Solihull motorway was designed to relieve the D2 section of the M5 from Junctions 4-8. Other options considered were to build a Strensham to Coventry motorway, however the idea of linking with the M42, rather than the M69, won out. This was the second route option via Redditch new town and was less destructive to farmland than the previous route via Evesham.
