The A1231(M) was a secretly numbered spur from the A1(M) near Washington services. It was created by the Birtley By-Pass Special Roads (Vigo Interchange) Connecting Roads (Extension) Scheme 1971.
The road started on the A1(M) at Vigo Interchange (the current J64) and headed east until it turned into the A1231 on losing motorway restrictions.
The A1231(M) was planned as the western end of the new A1231 into Sunderland from the west. Growth of the New Town of Washington forced these plans to change and that road was plugged into the A1 further north instead. The road in Vigo was renumbered A195 and A195(M), which is also secretly numbered.
