The motorway spur towards Leicester from M1 junction 21 was originally numbered A46(M). The terminal junction of this motorway was numbered J21A, and was in a different location to the present use of that number. It opened on 22 January 1965 at the same time as the adjacent M1 was opened between Lutterworth and Markfield.
The road lost its motorway status following construction of the M69 in 1976. It is now part of the A5460.
