The M69 is a motorway connecting the two large cities of Coventry and Leicester, which also links the M1 and M6, avoiding the Catthorpe Interchange. Built as D3M but quite quiet, the M69 shadows the former route of the A46, which is now a mixture of B- and unclassified roads.
Junction 3 with the M1 is unfinished, missing direct sliproads to both the Leicester Outer Ring Road, and from the M1 southbound.
M69 is often quoted as an incorrect number, with the preferred number usually suggested as M46, as it shadows the former route of A46). However, this is a falsehood as the motorway is entirely within the motorway zone 6, and is not within the motorway 4 zone.
Unusually, in 1974 a campaign group formed to protest in favour of the motorway being built. They called themselves "M69 Now". The road was cancelled due to the ongoing oil crisis, but the campaign saw it re-approved a few months later, and it opened just three years later.
