Junctions
Lawrence Weston Interchange
Main Article: Lawrence Weston Interchange
The Lawrence Weston Interchange is a complex junction between the M5, M49 and Avonmouth Spur, which leads to the A4. For the M5, it is J18, and has no junction number on the M49. The interchange itself is free-flow and all movements are possible except for vehicles travelling to or from M49 to the M5 northbound.
Opening Dates
The 5 mile motorway from Lawrence Weston Interchange ((M5 J18) to Pilning Interchange (M4 J22)) was opened on 22 July 1996 by John Watts, Minister for Railways and Roads, with a cost of £32.5 million. The new M4 Second Severn Crossing had opened previously on 5 June 1996. The Bristol Evening Post reported that the M49 opening had been delayed by faults discovered in steelwork on some of the bridges. The contractor Balfour Beatty cited two wet winters and late changes in design to the road.
