The B4553 came into existence in 1935 and followed the direct route between the Worcestershire town of Tenbury Wells and the Herefordshire town of Leominster, although it actually ended to the north east of town in Stockton.
In the 1960s, the road was upgraded to Class I status, becoming the eastward extention of the A4112, which it remains.
