Herefordshire is a traditional county in western England. The county was linked administratively with Worcestershire between 1974 and 1998 but has now regained its county council.

Geography & Economy

Huntsham Bridge

Herefordshire is one of England's most rural and least populated counties, stretching from the Shropshire Hills to the Forest of Dean, and from the Welsh border to the Malverns. The River Wye enters the county in the west and heads east via the county town of Hereford before leaving to the south, taking in Symonds Yat as it does so.

The county is known for cattle and cider - and agriculture is still an important part of the economy; the Council logo includes an apple. Tourism is also important, with the county having a number of picturesque villages, particularly in the west. The Malverns and Forest of Dean and Black Mountains enter the county, although they are better associated with Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and South Wales respectively. As such the highest point in England south of the Pennines is in Herefordshire, albeit on the Welsh border. Herefordshire has the largest chained library in the world as well as the Mappa Mundi.

Roads

The A4111 in Eardisley

For a rural county, Herefordshire has a surprisingly comprehensive road network, with the majority of roads radiating out of the three main towns of Ledbury, Hereford and Ross-on-Wye. However, the River Wye forms a considerable barrier: there are fewer roads on the right bank and only a handful of bridges across the river.

Most non-trunk roads within the county are maintained by Herefordshire Council. National Highways maintain the north-south A49 and the A40/A449/M50 link in the south of the county. For some reason the A40 east of Ross is not trunk in Herefordshire but is over the border in Gloucestershire. Herefordshire is home of the most infamous motorway junction in the country, Linton Interchange; this is little more than a T-junction off both carriageways.
