Kinross-shire is a small traditional county in the central belt of Scotland. It has been associated with its larger neighbour, Perthshire for many years, first with a Joint County Council, and now as a combined Unitary Authority. Other than the county town of Kinross, and its near neighbour Milnathort, there are no towns and only a handful of villages in the largely rural county.

Geography & Economy

The A922 in Kinross

A little larger than nearby Clackmannanshire, but with a far smaller population, Kinross-shire is a county of gently undulating hills and pastures encircling Loch Leven. The north of the county climbs the slopes of the Ochil Hills, and so is sparsely populated, whilst the few towns and villages are clustered around the loch. There are few indigenous industries to the area, and other than forestry and farming, the county is in the commuter belt for most of Scotlands major cities. Tourism also plays its part in the countys economy, especially around the scenic Loch Leven.

Roads

For a small county, there is a good network of A and B roads, feeding off the M90 Motorway which provides direct access to Perth and Edinburgh as well as further afield. The A91 is an east-west route below the Ochils, whilst B roads complete the ring around Loch Leven. Most non-trunk roads within the traditional county are maintained by Perth and Kinross Council. The only trunk route is the M90, which is managed by Transport Scotland
