Denbighshire (Sir Ddinbych in Welsh) is a traditional county in North Wales. The county council was abolished in 1974 and the county was split between Gwynedd and Clwyd. A further local government reorganisation in 1995 reinstated Denbighshire County Council albeit under significantly different borders and so the county is now split between a number of different administrative areas.

Geography & Economy

A542 Horseshoe Pass

Denbighshire is vaguely in a Q-shape, with a narrow central section hemmed in between Merionethshire and Flintshire. The north of the county borders the Irish Sea, the west the River Conwy and part of the east the River Dee, after which the river cuts across the southern section of the county; other borders are in the hills with the county entering Snowdonia, the Clwydian Range and the Berwyn Mountains. Farming was the major industry with the exception of the Wrexham area which was industrial. The coal mines have now closed, although Wrexham is still known for breweries, and so Denbighshire's main source of income is now tourism. Colwyn Bay is an important seaside resort (although somewhat overshadowed by nearby Llandudno and Rhyl in neighbouring counties). Llangollen is world-famous for the annual International Musical Eisteddfod. The Llangollen Canal heads east from the town into England, crossing the River Dee on Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

The winding county border means Denbighshire's roads automatically somewhat dispersed. Denbigh and Wrexham are focuses in their own areas but the county has no obvious road network; often the direct route between two places in the county takes drivers through another county. There are few roads at all in the mountains of the south and southwest whilst the main north-south routes, the A470 and A525 both follow river valleys, although only the former is trunk. The North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent maintains five trunk roads, although none of these roads are in Denbighshire for very long. The A55 follows the coast whilst the A470 runs along the west of the county; the A483, the east; and the A494, the short middle section of the county. The A5 enters the south of the county twice, passing through Corwen in Merionethshire in between. Most non-trunk roads in Denbighshire are maintained by Conwy CBC in the west and north, Denbighshire County Council in the centre, Powys County Council in the south and Wrexham CBC in the east.
