Cardiganshire (Sir Aberteifi in Welsh) is one of the traditional counties of West Wales. The post-1888 county council was abolished in 1974. After nearly 20 years administered as part of Dyfed the area regained its own administration in 1995, albeit with the name Ceredigion. The traditional county town is Cardigan, although Aberystwyth also claims the honour and the county is currently administered from Aberaeron.

Geography & Economy

Devil's Bridge

Cardiganshire's borders are largely geographical, with the county running west-east from the sea to the Cambrian Mountains and north-south from the River Dovey to the River Teifi. Although the coastal area is relatively flat, the majority of the county is mountainous, including the massif of Plynlimon; the Rivers Severn, Wye and Rheidol all rise in this area making it one of the most important watersheds in the country. Traditional industries include farming and ore mining, although the latter has ceased. The sea has been important to Cardiganshire, with ports like Cardigan and New Quay being centres for shipbuilding; the former was one of the most important ports in the country. Although seafaring has declined New Quay and Aberystwyth are still important resorts. Cardiganshire is also a centre for learning: Britain's third oldest university outside Scotland was founded in Lampeter (it is now part of University of Wales Trinity St David) and Aberystwyth is home of the National Library of Wales.

Roads

The A487 at Aberarth

Roads in Cardiganshire are bound by the terrain. The flatter west of the county sees a road along the coast and others in the river valleys, with a reasonable network of Class II roads connecting them. However, there are few roads in the eastern mountains, with the A44 the only classified road to head east across them. The North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent maintains the county's two trunk roads: the A487 coast road and the A44 east into Montgomeryshire. Most non-trunk roads are maintained by Ceredigion County Council.
