The A5078 is an urban link road on the western side of Crewe in Cheshire.
Route
Starting at a signalised TOTSO on the A532 near the Locomotive Works, the A5078 goes along Dunwoody Way, following the North Wales Coast railway line. The road TOTSOs left at traffic lights onto Wistaston Road to reach another set of lights immediately afterwards. From here a short 150 m spur leads on ahead along Oak Street to a roundabout on the A5019. The mainline, however, turns right (a turn which is prohibited in this direction) to continue south along Edleston Road. The railway line is immediately crossed and the road ends at traffic lights on the A534 Nantwich Road.
History
The A5078 came into being in the mid-1920s as the upgrade of the B5075, which ran along Edlington Road between the A534 Nantwich Road and the High Street, the original line of the A5019.
Much later, following the demolition of a sizeable part of the locomotive works, the A5078 was extended to the west to provide a western bypass to the town centre and serve the new retail developments. The original northern end of the road was declassified.
