This article is about the original incarnation in Shropshire.

The A5013 is described in the 1922 Road Lists as Link in Shrewsbury (Smithfield Road), making it a short road in the town centre.
The road started on the A5 after that crossed the Welsh Bridge and crossed into Mardol. The A5013 then headed eastward along Smithfield Road alongside the River Severn. It continued to within sight of the castle, ending on the A49 which originally crossed from Castle Gates into Chester Street.
In April 1934, the road was renumbered as a southern extension of the A53, which then ended on the A49 by Shrewsbury station. The present A5013 came into being in 1935. The road is now either the eastern end of the A458 or A488 depending on which map you look at.
