Middlewich church from the A533 (former A5021)
The A5021 number was originally allocated to the 100 or so yards of Leadsmithy Street in Middlewich. This road started on the A533 as it followed its original route from Lewin Street into Hightown. The A5021 then passed the church and ended shortly afterwards on the A54 Kinderton Street on the eastern edge of the town centre.
Today, the road is part of the A533 mainline, allowing traffic easier access onto the A54 town centre bypass.
The DfT Card Index from c2002 defines the A5021 as High Town, rather than Leadsmithy Street. As the original definition from the 1922 road list was simply 'Link in Middlewich' it is unclear if this was always the route, or if the route was changed at some point.
