A5034

Approaching Knutsford

The A5034 cuts off the eastern corner between the A50 and A556 to the north of Knutsford. Although the A556 has been downgraded to the B5569, the A5034 still remains according to OS maps - so unusually, at its northern end, the A road terminates on a B road. However, signage indicates that the A5034 has been extended to meet the A50, and therefore the B5569 terminates on the A5034 at Bucklow Hill - the A5034 forming a TOTSO.

What is even stranger is that, at its most northern end, the A5034 does not link with the A556; instead, a minor road takes traffic in a winding direction towards Ashley. In short, the A5034 serves no useful northbound purpose.

At Mere Crossroads to the west, some movements were prohibited before the realignment of the junction, where the A50 now takes priority over the former main road. those two roads actually cross - in both directions A556 traffic may not turn right onto the A50.
