The B1196 is a very slow route across the Fens.
It starts at a roundabout by the National Trust's Gunby Hall, where it meets the A158 and A1028, and winds vaguely north, with several sharp corners, via Welton le Marsh and Willoughby.
Presently the B1196 reaches Alford where it splits. The mainline (and original route of the road) goes along South Street to reach the High Street; alternatively turn left for Hamilton Road which gets to West Street. Both branches end on the A1104.
Originally, the B1196 continued north from Alford via Saleby, Withern and Legbourne to end on the A16 to the south of Louth town centre. The section immediately north of Alford was renumbered A1104 in the early 1920s when Mablethorpe was linked to the Class I network.
However, the days of the B1196 north of Alford were numbered. In the early 1930s, most of this became an extension of the A157; the remainder was renumbered B1373 so there would be no multiplex with the A1104. This state of affairs remains today, with the exception that the final section into Louth has been bypassed and is now part of the B1200.
