The B1301 is an urban B-road to the south of South Shields town centre.
It starts on the unclassified Commercial Road (formerly the B1302) near the River Tyne. It heads east, meeting its first classified road, the A194, at the next roundabout. The road passes Chichester metro station before turning left at a roundabout. This marks the original end of the B1301, where it met the A185, but it has since been extended.
The B1301 continues east along Dean Lane (the former B1300) to reach the A1018 at the Westoe Fountain roundabout. This is part of a one-way system numbered A1018 which allows westbound traffic on the B1301 to go more-or-less straight. Eastbound traffic, however, has to turn left (signs do not explain this) before taking the next right into an unclassified road before following the southbound A1018 back to meet the B1301.
Sanity restored, the B1301 continues east before bending into Horsley Hill to run parallel to the A183. It goes round Horsley Hill Square which has been given roundabout status before ending on the next roundabout on the A1300 in Marsden. The A183 and the North Sea are visible down the hill to the left.
