Originally, the B5037 was an eastern extension of the B5038 in Stoke-on-Trent, for traffic avoiding Longton. It started on the B5038 in Dresden before heading eastwards to meet the A50 on the edge of Normacot.
In the late 1960s, the road between Trentham and Normacot was deemed important enough for A-road status and therefore was renumbered A5035. This meant the end of the B5037 but was not the most recent renumbering of the road. That took place in the 1990s with the building of the "new" A50. The eastern end of the A5035 was blocked off and therefore that road was rerouted, swapping numbers with the B5038. This has led to the western section of the former B5037 (west of the A5005) now confusingly part of the B5038 whereas its eastern section is now unclassified as it now only provides residential access.
