The road along the ridge to the east of Tunstall, Burslem and Hanley in north Staffordshire was originally numbered B5049. At the beginning of the 21st century, it and the B5040 to the south were renumbered A5272, although some maps and road signs have yet to catch up with the change.
The road started on the A527 in Great Chell and headed vaguely southwards along High Lane, so-called as it runs along the top of a ridge. At the end of this road the B5051 was crossed after which the road bore left slightly to pass to the east of Burslem Cemetery. The A53 was crossed at the Holden Bridge GSJ, after which the road skirted Hanley Deep Pit (now reclaimed and turned into a park). The B5047 turned off in Birches Head towards Hanley itself, after which our road went through Northwood, descending to its end at a T-junction on the A5008.
