Route
The B5253 is a semi-rural B-road near Leyland in Lancashire.
The road starts at a roundabout on the A582 Lostock Hall bypass on Farington Moss and heads south along Flensburg Way. This section of road is a modern S2 bypass, with roundabouts. It meets the B5256 at one roundabout before passing between Moss Side and Broadfield, both suburbs of Leyland.
After changing its name to Schleswig Way (note the German theme here) the B5248 is crossed at traffic lights. At the next roundabout the road name becomes Leyland Lane and the road quality changes. In fact, the bypass has now ended and this is the original line of the B5253.
Back in open country, the road continues south before ending at a mini-roundabout on the A581 in Shaw Green, in the village of Ulnes Walton.
History
As alluded to above, the majority of the B5253 is now a bypass. Originally the road started on the A582 (now B5254) in Tardy Gate and headed south along Croston Road. It went through Faringdon, Earnshaw Bridge and Broadfield before meeting the current route of the road at Wade Hall. Except for a short section in Broadfield which is part of the B5248 one-way system all this is now unclassified.
Curiously, the DfT Card Index from c2002 lists the B5253 as 'Newtown - Lydiate Lane.' Newtown is a bit hard to pin down, but Lydiate Lane in Leyland has long since been part of the A5083, and has never been directly connected to the B5253 as far as can be ascertained. It seems most likely that this is an error, but it could hint at a scheme to move routes around within Leyland.
