The B5243 is the back route out of Southport towards Ormskirk.
The road starts on the B5208 (former A565) by St Peter's church in the Birkdale area of Southport and heads vaguely southwards, crossing the A5267 one block further south. The road now heads out of town along Kew Road. It zigzags left then right at adjacent mini-roundabouts to cross an unclassified road before reaching open country. Originally the road ran along the parallel Stamford Road.
The road then heads southeastwards across the marshes. It crosses a bridge over a dismantled railway line (requiring relatively steep gradients on either side) before bending sharply left and then more gently to the right.
No longer dead straight, the road continues across the fields into Scarisbrick. It ends in the centre of the village at a T-junction on the A570.
