The original B5288 was a link road in eastern Cumberland.
The road started on the A592 at Glencoyne Park, on the northern shore of Ullswater, and headed north along the valley of the Aira Beck. The stream was crossed at Dockray, after which the road continued to climb onto the moors. After reaching a height of over 1100 feet it reached the Trout Beck, which crosses relatively flat country, and followed it as far as Troutbeck village, where the road ended on the A594 (now A66).
The road was quickly upgraded to Class I status. In the mid-1920s it became the A5091, which it remains.
