The B5240 starts west of Skelmersdale at a roundabout junction with the A570 and B5312 immediately north of Junction 3 of the M58. It heads in a northerly direction across countryside towards the A577, with which it "multiplexes" for 190 m before branching off to the right and heading slightly downhill through more Lancashire countryside.
In a little under 2 km, and after several sweeping bends, we reach a small junction with a private road on the right which leads to the Lathom research and development laboratories of Pilkington Glass. From here the road continues along a relatively straight course, entering the long, scattered village of Lathom itself and passing Lathom Park Junior School on the left. A slight bend to the left and then a more sweeping right-hand curve follow before the B5240 comes to an end at a mini-roundabout junction with the A5209 (former B5239) between Burscough and Newburgh.
