The B5242 is a rural B-road in south Lancashire. It runs parallel to the A570 and allows traffic to bypass Ormskirk to the north.
The road starts at traffic lights on the A570 on the eastern edge of Scarisbrick. To begin with it heads northeastwards to go through the linear village of Bescar before turning southeastwards towards its final destination.
A short distance further on the road bends sharply to the right and then crosses Heaton's Bridge over the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. It continues across flat farmland to reach a roundabout on the edge of an industrial estate. The road ends a short distance further on at a T-junction on the A59 on the southern edge of Burscough.
