This article is about the original route of the B5290 in the Lake District.
For the current B5290 in northern Lancashire, see B5290.
For the possible former use of the number in Manchester, see B5290 (Wythenshawe - Moss Side).

The B5290 number was originally allocated to the road between Keswick and Bothel in Cumberland.
The road appears to have been rapidly upgraded to an extension to the A591 by 1927-28, as this change is shown on the relevant MoT Map, with the B5290 number shown as being used in Manchester by the 1932 edition of the OS Ten Mile Road Map.
The southern end of the road (within the Keswick bypass) is now part of the A5271 and the rest remains the A591.
