The B1314 is a short urban B-road to the east of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre.
It starts on the A186 Walker Road close to the River Tyne and heads north along Allendale Road to reach a roundabout on the B1313, where it ends.
History
The B1314 has had a complex history, and been re-routed more than once, although the full story is not entirely clear. The original route of the B1314 was slightly further north to it's current location. It started on the A695 (now A193) Shields Road and continued north along Chillingham Road to end on the A188 Benton Road. This section is now part of a rerouted A188.
The original route remained the only part of the B1314 into the late 1960s, but at some point, probably during the 1970s, things started to change, as the present B1314 was originally unclassified but had got its number by the 1980s. The DfT Card Index from c2002 has the following to say about the B1314:
Newcastle upon Tyne. (Millers Road - Fossway (part) Union Road - Bothal Street - Allendale Road) Extension of B1314 (Chillingham Road made PR(ARSS) in HR.
While the street names appear to possibly be out of sequence, it suggests that the B1314 had stolen a section of the B1313 along Union Road and Bothal Street, and gained its current route along Allendale Road as well. What is less clear is the reference to Chillingham Road. This is excluded from the initial list of street names, but it is implied that the B1314 has been extended, rather than re-routed. The various acronyms are also confusing, as while PR may mean Primary Route (as yet it doesn't appear to have ever been mapped as such), and HR may mean Highway Review, ARSS remains a mystery in this context.
Until further mapping evidence is found, it cannot be completely confirmed that the original and current lines of the B1314 co-existed, but the DfT text implies it.
