History
The number came into being in Summer 2020 with the opening of the new Westwood Way to the south of the town, diverting the A49 to bypass Newtown, Wallgate, Worsley Mesnes and the notorious Saddle Junction. The new bypass was built along a former railway corridor, linking up the already A49 dual carriageways Warrington Road and Chapel Lane, making the whole A49 up to the top of Wigan town centre a dual carriageway. This helped to improve traffic along the now B5386, which just serves to link the A49 with bypassed suburb areas and the Western A577.
Route
The route begins on a roundabout in Goose Green, Wigan, with a small residential estate connected opposite, crossed perpendicular by the A49 as a primary through-route. The route heads North as a continuation of Warrington Road, passing through a toucan, pelican, and then another toucan crossing.
The road then loses its centre line and squeezes to pass under Skew Bridge - a narrow but tall railway bridge connecting Liverpool to Wigan.
The road widens again and passes five short, one-way residential streets, linking the route with the A571 Victoria Street. The route then ends by merging with the A571, which then becomes Warrington Road, with no turn access in-between. The A577 quickly merges afterwards, again becoming Warrington Road.
