Route
The B4440 is a link cutting the corner from the A40 at Holtspur to the A4094 at Wooburn Green that provides a more direct Beaconsfield to Marlow link than the flatter Wye Valley route via Loudwater.
After leaving the A40 at a small roundabout, the B4440 crosses the M40 with no junction. It then descends a 10% hill before entering Wooburn Green and heads around the east side of the Green itself before ending on the A4094 at the war memorial.
History
The area in 1923
The B4440 was an unclassified road in 1922. It was upgraded to class II in the mid-1920s, at that time linking the A32 to the A40. The A32 was renumbered as the A4094 in the 1935 Road numbering revision; at the same time it was proposed that the B4440 be renumbered as an extension of the B476. This renumbering was approved by the Ministry of Transport, but never implemented.
