The DfT Card Index of c2002 assigns the A5096 number to a route between Oadby and Wigston on the southern edge of Leicester. Further investigation shows an un-numbered A road stretching from Oadby west through Wigston and on to the then-A46 near Narborough on the 1972 OS Quarter Inch Map, although this route is still a B road on the 1971 edition. The 1971 One Inch sheet, however, shows an un-numbered A road in Oadby town centre, cut off by the edge of the sheet.
All in all, it would appear that the A5096 was created in 1971/2 and ran west from Oadby to meet the A46, before subsequently being curtailed as a shorter route connecting Oadby and Wigston. The whole route has now resumed its original number of B582.
